The urbanization of the area dates back to the end of the 19th century, when Rome experienced a great urban development following its unification with the Kingdom of Italy and its becoming the capital.
From the 1980s onwards, San Lorenzo gradually lost the popular character it had from its origins, with progressive gentrification which replaced the original inhabitants with university students from nearby Sapienza (which also moved some departments and institutes within the neighbourhood), as well as with artists, artisans, writers, actors, directors and intellectuals.
