The apartment is located at Piramide, a famous spot on the southernmost edge of the Historical Center, between likewise quaint Testaccio and Garbatella.
Via Ostiense, one of Rome’s oldest intertown roads, starts exactly from here, still providing a direct link between the city, its ancient port town (Ostia Antica) and the modern Ostia Beach.
The whole Ostiense area has thus been a key hub for trade and continuous urban and architectural development over the centuries, to the point that It was recently quoted by the British newspaper “The Guardian” as one of the 10 coolest neighborhoods in Europe.
The name of the oldest and most central nucleus of larger Ostiense, where our apartment is placed, derives in its turn from the Nubian style pyramid built here in the1st century B.C., to serve as tomb for the magistrate Gaius Caestius. Due to its incorporation into Emperor Adrian’s City fortifications, the Pyramid today is also one of the best preserved ancient buildings in Rome.
The rest of the urban area at the south of the ancient metropolis, up to what is today the modern E.U.R., retained its rural character until the early 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s however, it saw a strong industrial development, with the construction of numerous factories, the River Port, the power plant, the General Markets, and the Gasometer, still an undisputed symbol of the neighborhood and a beloved location for artists and film directors, such as Ferzan Ozpetek who set his 2001 film "Le fate ignoranti" (The Ignorant Fairies) here.
Industrial development, the arrival of new workers, and the increase in population brought new vitality and modernity to the neighborhood, which over the years became a hub for nightlife.
However, its strong cultural heritage should not be overlooked. In addition to the sites already mentioned above, we find the interesting Ostiense Necropolis, the 19th century Non-Catholic Cemetery with the tombs and epitaphs of renowed international artists having resided in Rome, or the Centrale Montemartini Museum, the second exhibition center of the Capitoline Museums.
Nowadays, Piramide and Ostiense neighborhoods have become also key locations for Roman street art, veritable open-air museums, including JB Rock's "Wall of Fame," the mural created by Blu to draw attention to illegal squatting, and Europe's largest anti-smog mural, "Hunting Pollution," which, thanks to the special paint it is made of, purifies the air.
Thus, while helping you visit at your ease all the important icons of Rome’s historical past, your stay at our apartment will also introduce you to one of the city's most unique and vibrant contemporary areas, where, from the Pyramid of Cestius to industrial architecture, street art and great films, art, culture, and nightlife, everything comes together to make this neighborhood unique, rich in history, and one-of-a-kind.
The apartment is located just around the corner (2 minute walk) from Piazzale Ostiense, one of the best transportation hubs in town. Within its large net of buses, trams and trains, to and from everywhere in Rome, we suggest:
• "Piramide” metro B station to Circo Massimo, Terme di Caracalla and Colosseo in 10/15 minutes. To Santa Maria Maggiore with Pope Francis tomb and Termini Station in 20 minutes;
• Express bus line 30, to most highlights of the city, such as Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori, in about 10 minutes, San Pietro Cathedral, Cappella Sistina and Musei Vaticani within 20 minutes.
• Ostia Lido train station to the archaeological site of Ostia Antica in 20 minutes and to Ostia Beach in half an-hour.
Finally, our location also enjoys a fast, cheap and direct connection by train with Fiumicino Airport from Stazione Ostiense, standing iin Piazzale dei Partigiani, at still a few steps away from home.
